Academic Accommodations for Adults
I am an adult with learning disabilities.
Am I entitled to accommodations in professional certification exams?

What about a Driver’s license exam? How do I go about getting these accommodations and what type of documentation do I need?

In order to receive accommodations to all of the above, you need to have a certified psycho-educational evaluation less than 4 years old. A list of testing and frequently asked questions is located at www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/dispsvc/index.htm for students with LD or ADHD. A sliding fee scale may apply.

Montgomery College Disability Support Services (DSS) is the central processing point for Credit, Non-Credit, Workforce Development & Continuing Education courses. These include professional certification exams, driver education, and GED preparation, etc.

With an evaluation in hand, apply for admission to the college in person or online. The cost is a $25 one-time, non-refundable processing fee. In 1–2 weeks you will receive an acceptance letter from the college.

Then make an appointment with in the College Placement Center to take English, Math and Reading entrance tests. (Take the acceptance letter with you.) Tests require an appointment. They are untimed, multiple choice and can be taken over a period of 2 days, if needed. There are 3 campuses: Rockville, Germantown, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring.

Next, make an appointment with DSS at 301-279-5058. Evening appointments are available. The counselor will take you from there toward the registration of your choice.

Academic Accommodations available are:
Note taker or Scribe or Reader
Tape recorder
Test in a quiet place
Extended time on tests
Assistive technology device
Assistive computer equipment
Possibly an alternative assessment e.g. a portfolio assessment

(This research was done by Judy Lantz 301-942-3158 in July 2006 at the Rockville Campus with assistance from Rose Sacks, Chairperson of Prescriptive Services and DSS Counselor. Her phone number is 301-279-5077. Rose and her staff are members of LDAMC.) Please send Judy any updates and/or corrections.
