MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

MARK TITUS

On March 17, 1999 I thought about starting up a support group for young adults with learning disabilites. I just was not sure about how to go about doing just that. I spoke with the Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County and told them I was interested in starting up a support group.

The president helped me and provided advice. She directed me to another LDAMC board member who happens to be a social worker. After speaking with the social worker, he agreed to be my group's sponsor/chairperson. It was not until I was finished with the school year when I started to put together a brochure for the support group. I spent about two to three days working on the brochure, and afterwards took them to the print shop to have copies printed up.

In middle of August 1999 I distributed the brochures to all Montgomery County public libraries and also to recreation centers. In late August 1999 I contacted the Washington Post's Health magazine and listed the support group's first meeting. The notice was published on September 21, 1999. THE DAY OF THE FIRST OFFICIAL FUN BUNCH MEETING.

From the first meeting, there were myself and three other individuals who attended. It was decided that the best nights to hold the meetings was on Wednesday nights. Ever since the FUN BUNCH, that night, the group has held the meetings on Wednesday nights. THE FUN BUNCH also does Social activites as well. The first ever social activity of the group was held at Dave & Buster's on October 10th, 1999.

The FUN BUNCH has social activities at least once a month, and sometimes twice a month. This was the format of the FUN BUNCH until July 2000. The new format of the FUN BUNCH is a 3 week rotation. One Wednesday night, the group talks about discussion topics, the very next Wednesday night we talk about planning social activities, and then the following Wednesday night we have a Wednesday night social activity. This Wednesday night activity is what the group calls a "wellness night" activity.

Another change that has taken place in the group, is as of July 2000 there is a 25 cent per person charge per meeting. Prior to July 2000 the group was free except for cost incurred at social activities. At the present time, September 30, 2000 there are 17 members in the FUN BUNCH.
