Meeting Times - Start: 7.05 pm - End: 9.00 pm
- Mike Burke
As all of you know, Mike Burke passed away on March 10th. He suffered a massive stroke and was placed on life support, and then was taken off of life support on the night of March 10th. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Michael’s family, to Cathy, and to Bob Johnson. This meeting is being offered as a means of Fun Bunch members expressing their thoughts on Mike Burke. The meeting also looked into ways that we feel that we might be able to help Mike’s widow, Cathy through this terribly difficult time. Here are some notes on what was discussed during the meeting:
- Rules- The group went over the rules
The group OK’d the rules and for some rules, we either reworded or rephrased some of the rules. Here is a list of the rules that were changed:

“The Fun Bunch is for adults ages 21 and over; however an individual 18 years and older may apply for an exception.”

“The Fun Bunch is for adults ages 21 and over; however an individual 20 years old may apply for an exception.”

“The maximum cost for an activity will not exceed $30.”

“The group will try not to exceed $40 per event. However, there may be some exceptions.”

“There will be no alcoholic consumption at sanctioned Fun Bunch events.”

“There will be no alcoholic consumption at sanctioned Fun Bunch events, except for special occasions such as the yearly Holiday party. Always make sure that there is always a designated driver!!!”
The group also agreed that we would reword #8, but there was not enough time to do so, therefore we will reword #8 during the May meeting
- Positions
The group decided that we would like to go ahead and to hold elections later this year. The elections most likely will not be held until the June meeting. With elections in mind, the group decided to brainstorm and create different positions. The following is a list of positions that came up during discussion:
a) President
b) Vice-President
c) Sign Language Interpreter- Cathy
d) Activities Planner
e) Phone Tree Coordinator
f) Program Coordinator
g) Marketing Coordinator
- Define Positions
It was the group’s intent to define what the responsibilities of each new position should be, however there just was not enough time. We will discuss this at the May meeting.
- Position Eligibility
It was the group’s intent to discuss who would be eligible to run for each position. However, there just was not enough time. We will discuss this at the May meeting.
- Donations
In light of Mike’s death, the group has decided to take donations, under Mike’s name. The group decided that we will take two separate donations. The first donation will go to Mike’s alma mater, The Maryland School For the Deaf, which is located in Frederick, Maryland. The second donation will be made to the Diabetes Association, since Mike did have diabetes. During the meeting, the group did decide that they wanted to make donations, but that they did not have the money. We will take donations at the May meeting.
- Mentoring
During a recent meeting, Coco had mentioned that she knew a lady at the LAB school in Washington, D.C. She had also mentioned to the Fun Bunch the possibility of mentoring LAB school students. Due to the fact that we ran out of time, we will discuss this matter at the May meeting.
- Movie Nights
Once again, at a recent Fun Bunch meeting, Coco had mentioned that she would speak with the LAB school about the possibility of starting a joint LAB school/Fun Bunch movie night at the LAB school. Again, since time ran out, we will discuss this matter during the May meeting.
- Multiple Month Birthday Celebration
We agreed that we would still celebrate the next multi-month birthday celebration in June at the FORTUNE STAR BUFFET in Rockville, Maryland. We will be celebrating the April, May, June, and July birthdays in the group. The following members have birthdays in that span: Bob, Mark, Steven D., John V, Lorin, Nathalie, Jason, and Nina.
- Summer Event Ideas
Since time ran out, we never got to this item, and we will discuss this item during the May meeting.
- Fun Bunch 10th Anniversary
With the Fun Bunch’s 10th anniversary approaching, September 21st, we need to start planning on what we would like to do for the anniversary. Due to time running out, we will talk about this at the May meeting.
- Future Events
Due to the time constraint, we mentioned that we might try and do a movie night the first weekend in May, OR we might try and do something in middle of May. The only event that seems to be in concrete at the time, is the multi-month birthday celebration in June. We will try and plan more events at the May meeting.
- Next Meeting
The next Fun Bunch meeting will take place on Wednesday May 20th at the Strathmore Court Apartment Community Room. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.
