Members Present:Bobby, Nathalie, Natalie, Lorin, Carla, Cathy, Mark, Eric, Stephen, Coco
Meeting Start Time: 7:08 Meeting End Time: 9:00
- Positions and Responsibilities:
After discussion, here is what each position is and what each position’s responsibilities include:
PRESIDENT- Will coordinate with both the Vice-president and the activities planner to make sure everything runs “smoothly”. Will guide the group in a positive way. Will attempt to improve the group’s image and to better market the group.
VICE-PRESIDENT- To write e-mails to group regarding reminders about meetings and events. To follow and to implement what Mark wants or feels is best for the group. (Lorin is interested)
SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER- To sign for deaf clients in the group. Since Cathy is the only person who knows sign language, she will fill this position.
ACTIVITIES PLANNER- Will create a list of social activities that the group can do and to keep track of the dates and types of activities that the group does. (Nathalie Bell-Irving is interested)
PHONE TREE COORDINATOR- Will call and remind those members whom have not yet responded to e-mail reminders regarding meetings and activities. ( Cathy, Eric, and Natalie Van Rossum all seemed to be interested)
PROGRAM COORDINATOR- Responsible for planning academic topics. This person will hold a two-tier job. The first job will be to coordinate in association with both Judy Lantz and Susan Healy, academic programs for the community but would have interest for Fun Bunch members. The second job, is helping to create “workshops”, “classes”, or any topic of interest to Fun Bunch members. This will be separate from Fun Bunch meetings. For example there could be a “class” on how to best deal with grief, or a “class” on how to cook, or any other topic that might be helpful to Fun Bunch members. (Carla seemed to be interested)
MARKETING COORDINATOR- Will be responsible for creating new brochures and fliers for the group AND will be responsible for thinking of and implementing ways to promote the group, thereby increasing the group’s chances of gaining new members. (Lorin seemed to be interested)
- Donations In Mike’s Name:
Once again, not enough members had money, so it was decided that an e-mail will be sent out amongst members that we will be collecting money at the time of the June meeting. There will be two separate collections. The first collection will go towards Mike’s alma mater, The Maryland School for the Deaf. The second collection will go towards the Diabetes Association.
- Proposed Rule:
The group had a discussion on what should be deemed “appropriate” and what should be deemed “inappropriate” in terms of clothing. After the discussion, the following “proposed” rule was introduced: “ No clothing that has obscene language or any other vulgarities shall be worn at Fun Bunch meetings or Fun Bunch social activities. For “formal” Fun Bunch events, such as the annual holiday party, no informal clothing is to be worn. At no time, whether at a Fun Bunch meeting or a Fun Bunch social activity, shall there be any “provocative” clothing, or tight-fitting clothing, or “slutty” clothing worn.” During the June meeting, we will talk more about this new “proposed” rule. We shall discuss whether or not we want to put this to a vote.
- Rule #8:
It was intended to talk about this rule, how much to charge for gas money, but time ran out on us. Will discuss at the June meeting.
- Mentoring:
Mark asked the group how much interest was there in regards to Fun Bunch members mentoring LAB school adults. There seemed to only be a luke warm response. Although one member asked if it was possible for Fun Bunch members to be mentored. Mark stated that he would look into the matter and ask both Judy Lantz and Susan Healy.
- Movie Nights with LAB school:
Coco and I have the name and phone number of a person at the LAB school, the night school. All we have to do is contact this person and talk about this item. It seems that this person is busy and does not have much time to put a lot of effort into coordinating. Coco pointed out that all we have to do is to inform this person that we would only need a room with either a VCR or a DVD and we could do the rest. We can discuss this further at the June meeting. Lorin mentioned that we should make up signs for the night school students: WANT TO MEET THE FUN BUNCH? THEN COME TO A MOVIE NIGHT!
- Multiple-Month Birthday Celebration:
This event has been set for Saturday June 20th at 6:00 p.m. at the Fortune Star Buffet. The members with birthdays: Bob, Mark, Steven D., John V., Lorin, Nathalie, Jason, and Nina.
- Fun Bunch 10th Anniversary:
The actual date of the anniversary is September 21st, 2009. This does not mean that we have to celebrate on the actual day of. Some possible ideas of how to celebrate are to go to Kings Dominion, go to Montgomery College’s (Rockville) summer dinner theatre, or a pool party/cookout. We did not set a date nor did we select an event, just brainstormed some possible events.
- Summer Event Ideas:
Nathalie passed out a list of events that the group could do this summer. The following was on her list:
a) picnics in a park or at somebody’s apartment or condo
b) Barbeque at someone’s apartment of condo
c) Putt-putt golf
d) Swimming
e) Hiking
f) Movie night
g) Day trip to a movie theatre
h) Canoeing at a national park
i) Horseback riding
j) Paddle boating at the RIO center
k) Eat at a restaurant outdoors
l) Roller skating
m) A day trip to the Woodley Park Zoo and bring money for lunch
Among the events that the members present at the meeting seemed to like the most were going to the zoo, roller skating, horseback riding, going to a movie, and putt-putt golf.
- Next Meeting:
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday June 17th, 2009 at the Strathmore Court Apartment Community Room. Start time is yet to be determined. There has been a member requesting that the start time be moved to 6:30 p.m. Mark has asked Richard Bell-Iriving if this is possible. Still waiting to hear back from Richard Bell-Irving. Another matter is whether when Coco would be able to come to the meetings if we do switch the start time of the meetings. Stay Tuned for the starting time.
